Isetan

I've been going to Isetan Men's lately to buy clothes. This past weekend was a sale so there were many people there. I was only able to score a T-shirt on sale. I had to evacuate to the roof top for some air.
Yes, seriously..
They had grass on the roof top making it a very different change in pace from the rest of the building. Very nice oasis in the middle of Shinjuku.

T-shirts一枚だけ買って非難しました。いやー、大変でした。

屋上で一休みと上がってみたらそこは別世界。芝が敷いてあってなかなか良いスペースとなっていました。

Akihabara

I went to the electric capital of Japan, Akihabara. Hadn't been to Akihabara in a long time. It was a lot cleaner and developed than before.

今日は久しぶりに秋葉原に行ってきました。昔より大分キレイになっていました。

Aussie Ad

Here is an ad for American Touge 2 for the Australian market. It got great reviews in a couple of magazines down under.

Touge is touge but a different touge. This is tougei, pottery. I think Japanese tougei is close to meditation. We went to a tougei class about a month ago and today the works finally came back.

いつも峠の英語でＴｏｕｇｅと言っていますが、同じＴｏｕｇｅでもこっちは「陶芸」。先月陶芸教室に行ってみました。今日やっとそのボウルというか、お椀？が返ってきました。出来はまぁまぁですかね・・でもやっている時はかなり集中して気持ちよかったです。

We just had our small shareholders meeting today. I explained GT Channel as our most important project for this year. Consolidating our efforts under one brand will be an effective way to focus our attention.
It's moving along and going well.

今日は実は株主総会でした。その中で「GT Channel」がもっとも今後注力するプロジェクトであることを説明しました。ジグザグ・アジアとして一つのブランドの下にコンテンツを位置づけ力を集中することができます。

In the Neighborhood

I saw this car parked in the neighborhood. Pretty nice.The body has the used up look but the engine room was shining just like new.

近所にこんな車が止まっていました。なかなか渋いですね。ボディーはわざとユーズドっぽくなっていましたけどエンジンルームはピカピカでした。

NBC Strikes Deal with Youtube

NBC Youtube

The Wall Street Journal reported that NBC has plans to upload promotional video clips of some of its TV shows, including "Saturday Night Live" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." NBC will advertise on YouTube and promote the site on some of its TV shows.

Up until now Youtube was considered to be the deadly foe of the networks but I guess they figured if they can't beat them join them.

The same goes to us as content producers. It is not a battle against illegal downloading and streaming. We must find a way to work with these new media distribution channels.

GT Channel will be our first step in our attempt to make Best Motoring and Hot Version available over the net. Gt Channel will not limit to only the above. Wait just a little more and you will see. This is just the beginning...

NBCがYOUTUBEと提携

ウォールストリートジャーナルでいよいよメジャーネットワークのNBCがYoutubeと提携したと出ました。人気番組のSaturday Night LiveやJay LenoのプロモーションをYoutubeと提携しながら行う。

今までYoutubeは３大ネットや映画会社から憎くき敵として位置づけられていたが、これで見方が変わったかもしれない。

ジグザグ・アジアにしても同じ、もうネットがDVD事業の敵と考えるよりも、ネットを利用した新しい事業モデルや逆にDVD販売のためのプロモーションに積極的に使うべき。海賊版のダウンロードが多いと泣いても結局米国の連邦政府も警察も中国の当局も何もしてくれない。このような新しいDistribution方式を取り入れることが先決。

ということで７月には「GT Channel]という新サービスを開始します。今までアメリカではDVDでしか見ることができなかったBest Motoring やHot Versionの動画配信を始めます。サービス開始まであと少し。しかし、まだまだこれは序の口です・・・

Ecuador

Ecuador advances to the final 16 of the World Cup in Germany. I'm quite impressed. In '98 I had a chance to stay in Ecuador for a few weeks to visit my friend Francisco and his family.

エクアドルがワールドカップでベスト１６に進出しましたね。結構強いですね。ポテンシャルありますね。
９８年に高校時代の親友であるフランシスコをたずねエクアドルを訪問したことがあります。とっても自然が美しい国でした。治安はそれほど良くはないが、色々と自由に旅をしました。

そしたらちゃんとありました。

抜けている画像などもありますが、いったいどうやってこれが残っているのかちょっと不思議でしたけど。
近いような、遠い昔のような気がしましたね。色々あったなぁー、みたいな。
かなり懐かしかったです。

MSC Challenge

I went to Nikko on Sunday to check out a Yokohama Tire sponsored event called MSC Challenge.
日曜日は日光にMSC チャレンジというイベントを見に行ってきました。





As you can see, taking pictures of cars sliding sideways at 100km/h is not that easy!
ピンボケですね・・・なかなか１００ｋｍ横向きに走っている車を撮るのは難しい！

On a separate note, Japan tied with Croatia yesterday. Now we are 0 wins:1 tie:1 loss. Our only way to advance is to beat Brazil by at least 2 points...
Many Japanese will be praying this Thursday.

クロアチアとは引き分けでしたね。０勝１敗１分け。喜ぶべき成績ではないですが、首の皮一枚でつながったという感じでしょうか。

次はブラジル。

ブラジルは昨日オーストラリアに２－０で勝ちました。
もう日本はブラジルに勝つしかありません。しかも２得点差をつけて。

Slide Show

There are so many new services always coming out to make our web experience more and more fun. Myspace has the second most pages views out of all sites and it does it by just giving free space to people. Amazing. If I was 16, I'd be on it all day.

ウェブの新しいサービスは毎日どんどん生まれています。
これはslide.comという写真をアップロードしてスライドショーのタグを自動的に再生してくれるサービス。Myspace,Bloggerなどいろいろなサイトに貼れるようになっている。アメリカのティーンエージャーには絶対的な人気を持つSNSサービスのMyspaceはYahooにつづくPVを持つとしてどこの検索エンジンを採用するなど今話題になっている。
ボクが１６才のときにこんなものがあれば一日中やっているでしょう・・・
「今のコたちはいいなぁ、」なんてすごいオヤジ臭いことを最近すぐ言ってしまう・・・

Takeshita Dori

This is a photo of Takeshita dori in Harajuku.
Our office is located near Harajuku station. Harajuku is a pretty hip town with lots of places you can shop for clothes. Takeshita dori is actually not the place to go to find the latest fashion but has lots of small shops for kids.
You have to walk more towards Omotesando from Harajuku to find the latest styles coming out of Tokyo. The back streets of Harajuku and Omotesando is where many Japanese apparel brands have started up. Bathing Ape is from here too.
The front street of Omotesando is all international brand names like Dior, Gucci, Armani you name it. Ralph Lauren just opened up a direct managed retail store on Omotesando.
It's good to have my office here to see the drastic movements in fashion and retail. It gives me inspiration and new ideas.

Super Street July

My article about the Best Motoring/Hot Version event in Tsukuba is in the latest issue of Super Street magazine. It's called "The Wet Spot" since it was raining so hard that day. Despite the conditions it still was a pretty awesome event. When you have so many top name tuners and cars at one location, you can't go wrong.

筑波のベストモータリング・ホットバージョンイベントを取材したボクの記事が米雑誌Super Streetの今月号に掲載されました。あまりにも雨がすごかったので記事のタイトルは「WET SPOT」となっています。WET SPOTとは英語でオネショのこと・・・あれだけの土砂降りのイベントの割りにはお客さんも集まりも主催側も最善を尽くしたと思います。

On another note, Japan lost to the Aussies 1-3!
They scored 3 points in the final 10 minutes. Japan had the 1-0 for most of the game but the Australian team never gave up and just stompped all over us in the final minutes of the game...
What I couldn't understand is why Zico didn't change the players earlier. It was 30 degrees heat and obvious our guys were tired. Tsuboi got hurt and Moniwa went in. About half way through the second half, when he put Ono in, I couldn't believe he took Moniwa out who was fresher than the other guys dragging their feet. Oh well...
Now we are in a tough position from the get go. If we don't win our next two games we are coming home early.
Next game is against Croatia. Go samurai blue!

Japan VS. Australia

Today is Japan's first game of World Cup games in Germany. We're in a very competitive group. We share seats with Australia, Croatia and Brazil. What luck to be in the same group as Brazil... The 1st and 2nd place teams get to go to the finals so basically it is a battle between Croatia, Australia and Japan for the second place spot. 42nd ranked Australia has a very good team this year headed by coach Hiddink who lead Korea to the final 8 in the last World Cup. They are bigger and taller than the Japanese team.
Japan is ranked 17th by FIFA but these rankings mean very little on the field. Anything can happen. Japan has a very disciplined systematic playing style and we take full advantage of penalty kicks. Penalty free kicks will be our key during this tournament and they are usually be kicked by Shunsuke Nakamura who played in Seria A in Italy and now plays for the Celtics in the Premier League. His performance will be a deciding factor. Also if Hidetoshi Nakata plays a solid good game to lead the team, we should have a good chance of winning.
My only concerns are if we can score enough points. Yanagisawa and Takahara will probably start but if they can't deliver we need to put in faster and younger players like Oguro and Tamada at half time.
The game starts at 9:50PM Tokyo time. Go Samurai Blue!

Chicken Sashimi For The Soul

Last week, Masa Kuji who runs Zigzag Asia (America) Inc. for us was back in Japan for the first time in 3 years.

We took every opportunity possible to try to get good Japanese food which he misses living in the US. Masa has a passion for Japanese sake and Japanese food. Even though he is in LA and often gets to eat Japanese food, there is nothing like the real deal back in Tokyo.


Here's a dish that is about to be cooked, you may think.

But no, it is not. It's a Japanese dish called Torisashi. Basically chicken sashimi.

Yes you read it right. It is raw chicken meat you enjoy with just some wasabi and soy sauce. Our friend Ichishima-san from Spoon (picture above facing away) took us to eat at a little hole in the wall yakitori joint near his office.

It was delicious and probably something Masa will never get to eat in the US.
Or should never eat anywhere else besides Japan for that matter...

Touge Racing at Gunma

Yesterday was another big shooting of the Touge Showdown at Gunma.
I cannot announce who won but it was definitely an exciting day out in the moutain hills of Japan. This is Power House Amuses's GT1 S2000. It's a come back for Amuse, since the Touge Monster crown is now held by RE Amemiya's RX-8.


M.C.R's Nissan Skyline GT-R. Kobayashi is said to take this thing over 275km/hour. I'm not saying where he does his testings.


Me and the monster. : ) This car is so fast it can beat Japan Rally Champ cars on the mountains.

C16 Autostyle

C16 Autostyle is a cool car and lifestyle magazine run by our friends at Overamerica. The latest issue had a nice spread on our American Touge 2 event from last December. Thanks guys!



Also this issue's main theme is The Hot List 06 where they have different movers and shakers of the import industry give a list of what they think would be hot this year.
The hot list panel includes RJ deVera, Stephan Papadakis(racer/drifter), Ryan Sage(Formula D), Rich Chang(Journalist)some others and yours truly. Pick it up if you have a chance.

Wairudo Supeedo

Somewhere in Japan there are guys that sit in their offices and say, "hmm, what kind of ridiculous movie titles can we come up for the next Hollywood flick that reaches our shores"?

The Fast and the Furious was not an exemption as it was labled "Wild Speed" pronounced Wairudo Speedo in Japan. The new Tokyo Drift is naturally called "Wild Speed 3". Not that the Fast and Furious is a great name or anything.

This has happened in Japan since foreign films have been around in Japan. Recently, I think the fact that the Japanese have been getting used to English words in general have helped the situation a bit. They just use the "katakana" letters to phonetically describe the title. "Misson Impossible" would be "misshon imposhiburu". You think that is bad, it is worse when the Japanese movie distributors try to come up with the J names themselves. Because some are just plain aweful.

When I came back to Japan as a kid my friend asked me if I had seen, "Michi Tono Sougu". I said I hadn't and was left out of a conversation. Later I found out he was talking about "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". "Micho tono sougu" means "encountering the unknown" in Japanese. How would I had known?
My favorite still must be a "Gentleman and an Officer" which was released as "Aito seishun no tabidachi". It literally means, "Journey of love and youthtime spring".
FORREST GUMP still cracks me up. It was called "Ichigo Ichie" which is a 4 letter Japanese proverb that means "Treasure every meeting, for it will never recur".

Beautiful, but I wish they had just stuck to simply calling it "Fohresuto Gampu"...
You decide which is better.

GT Channel.com

GT Channel will be our new site dedicated to bringing all kinds of car video content to consumers. First it will roll out as GT Channel.com offering free Best Motoring Intl. and Hot Version Intl. short clips thru the website. Eventually we will offer VOD content thru mobile and cable as well. Beta site is being worked on right now. Something should be up and running by mid June. Stay tuned!

Back in LA

Here's me taking a photo of everyone at Denny's. After the event, every restaurant was closed so our only choice was basically this Denny's off I-10 in Tempe near our hotel.



We were practically regulars there. The HKS Red Army.



After Phoenix, we returned to LA. I had a couple of business meetings and everyone from Japan had to return. Here's a photo of Ken's dog, Hana-chan. She's sweet as candy but no, I would never mess with this dog!

GTLIVE Phoenix 2006

I just got back from a week in Phoenix Arizona. Boy was it hot!
Zigzag Asia was there for a couple of reasons. One, to coorinate the XDL drift team with both JDM Drifting stars Manabu Orido and Nobuteru Taniguchi. Also Taniguchi was entering the Grand Am series in the SpeedSource RX-8 so I had to make sure everything went as smoothly as possible with his new team. When I went, I wasn't expecting to be his spotter on the radio but the team members didn't speak Japanese so naturally the job came to me. The race report is on the BMI blog.
The below photo shown is the RX-8 Taniguchi and his team mate Tarzan Yamada drove.

The second reason we where there was to follow Orido and Taniguchi around during the entire GTLIVE weekend and capture it on video. It will be for the reality style corner we have on our DVD called LIFE IN THE FAST LANE. It will be an interesting take on what these guys do on and off the track. This segment will be in our DVD scheduled for release at the end of July.



The drift demo went extremely well despite of the heat. Drifting puts so much stress on the engine and tires that we were lucky if we can put on a good 7 minute show. That just shows at what level a drift car needs to be set up to put on a good show. The day time demos were the toughest. Orido and Taniguchi would come around a do a few tricks in front of the crowd and then have to go back to the pits to spray water and ice on the engine to cool it down. Then they would go back out to burn more rubber. The Phoenix fans loved it. I believe it was the first time for many of them to see drifting. I think they got a chance to see what the fuss about this drifting was all about.

Good friend Manabu Orido opened a bar & diner in Yokohama. He had the opening party this past weekend and many people showed up.

Buying Water

Recently the water in our office is tasting a little funny. Actually we have one of those services where they deliver you the big bottles every couple of weeks. I think it's called Crystal Clara or something like that. When we first started it was a different name. Then the guys from the water company called and said, "hey we got sold off to another company but we'll still deliver you the same quality water". That was about a year ago. Then they called a few weeks ago and and said that the filter in the server needs to be changed. "ok.." So they came and changed the filter. Now the water tastes like chlorine. Come to think of it, why in the world would this server even need a filter? The water is supposed to be clean anyway. If I want water that tastes like chlorine, I'll go to the pool. Tap water tastes better than the crap we have at our office now. I came by this pretty funny video preview from the show Bullshit on bottled water. If no one at FDA is testing the waters in the US, I wonder who's testing the waters here in Japan?
Better think twice before making that purchase of bottle water at the supermarket next time.

American Touge 2 DVD Release!

Finally we got the AT2 DVD out today! Phew!

The videos fresh off the factory arrived to our office and we shipped out all of the pre-ordered DVDs to our dealers today. Some customers will probably get their new DVDs as early as this weekend.
I feel this DVD is a very big accomplishment since we produced it from the very start from getting the cars/tuners, video location shoot, editing and finally shipping out. Most of the time, it is only producing an English version of the J version. It has been a very cool experience for all of us at Zigzag Asia. Especially meeting everyone at Willowsprings and getting our US crowd onto the J version and bringing it back to the US means like we are really doing something we set out to do. To make that bridge between Japan and the US. I hope we will be doing more production work in the US soon. We've got some things ahead...

Prototype Racing

Last week I visited Joe McCarthy at Prototype Racing with Ichishima-san from Spoon. Joe is someone that has been building cars and racing cars for a long time. We saw a Lotus Exige with a K20A engine there. Pretty awesome.

Tsukuba Event

One thing that can compeletly ruin a great day at the tracks is the rain.
We got some cool footage but they had to cancel the N2 AE86 race. It was a bit disappointing but nothing anybody can do. 2&4 tried to make the best out of what they could do. The tuned Z battle was very exciting though, I must say.

BMI Blog (3)

Our BMI blog is finally up and going! Still Beta but it is pretty close to final. Now we still have to RSS feed the headers to the top page of bestmotoringvideo.com and it will be complete in terms of web building. Now we have to try to work a little more on beefing up the editorial aspect. I think we already have pretty good stuff. We are working on several partnerships right now.

It's been 2 weeks since the new spot in Omotesando opened so we went to go check it out last weekend. My advise. Wait another year until you go. The place is so packed they needed ropes to separate people to go one direction. No way you can windowshop as you have to go with the flow of the people or you will get knocked down and stepped on.

表参道ヒルズがオープンして2週間。家から歩いて行ってみましたが、後悔。とにかく人が多すぎて大変でした。それこそラッシュアワーそのもの・・もうすこし時間を空けてから又行くことにします。

Here is an interesting blog from a friend of mine. I never thought I would ever meet anyone as bilingual and biculture as me but there he was. He left Apex USA last year and has recently started up his own company and is involved in the production of Fast and Furious 3 Tokyo Drift. Way to go!

Our BMI Blog is almost up. It's fun but can be difficult at times to always keep it fresh. The whole idea of the blog is the utilize our assets to the fullest. It is too much of a waste to use it only for DVDs. Our new site will have lots of more stuff not limited to BMI and HVI. I'm really looking forward to where it can take us. After the blog, is our video section！

New Look

I got tired of the black look so I am trying this white clean cut look for a while.

ちょっと黒に疲れたのでニュールックは白で行きます。
たまには日本語で書くのもいいかな。
それにしても日本はトリノでメダルとれませんねぇ・・がんばって遅くまでみてもちょっと不完全燃焼です。

Japanese metro

I am one of the few fortunate people in Japan that do not have to take the train to go to work. In history class I learned about the old days when people traveled on boats to go every where. The "economy class" folks had to stay on the shipbed for more than a month all crammed in tight. I remember imagining the hell they had to go through. Now this situation on the Japanese metro is sort of similiar. I hope we can look back some day and say those were ridiculous times.

Special Run in Tsukuba 2006

2 more weeks to go until Special Run in Tsukuba 2006. Here are the details.
AE86 N2 Battle can not be missed. Some of you may have seen the earlier post of the Tsuchiya AE86 shakedown, but the car is in great shape! Last year KT had to retire due to machanical troubles but this year he is back for revenge. The rivals in this race are all experienced 86 drivers to even the Drift King can't win without a fight.


Next is the 350Z one make race, "Fairlady Z Hot Version Cup". Z tuners from Japan including the Nismo Fairlady Z RS concept will come together to decide once and for all which Z rules. BM and HV casters will all drive top name tuner Zs and battle for pride and honor.
Drift performances will be brought to you buy Japan's very best, Kazama Yasuyuki, Shigenobu Kumakubo, Yoichi Imamura and Kazuhiro Tanaka from Team Orange. All four are top D1 drivers and they will show all of their best tricks and even some hidden moves we usually cannot witness at D1 competitions.

To finish the event will be the final run by Hattori Naoki who just retired from Formula Nippon. He holds the Tsukuba course record in the Formula class which he will try to shatter for this last run.
Also talk shows by our usual cast members will take place. Booths from Japanese tuners will also be in the paddock area.
